New cycle path in Michelstadt: connection to the city center and R4 opened!

What is happening in Michelstadt? The new cycle and pedestrian path on Zeller Straße is finally completed after two months of construction. With a circumference of around 250 meters, it runs between the street Am Kellersgraben and the underpass under the B 45 to Asselbrunn. A time-honored, gravel path has now been given a fresh asphalt surface. This not only means an improvement for cyclists and pedestrians, but also a real improvement for the entire area.

During the construction work, numerous drainage work was carried out, old pipes were replaced and empty pipes were laid for future measures. The cycle and pedestrian path is 3.50 meters wide and has road markings and insect-friendly LED lighting, which contributes to environmental sustainability. Mayor Dr. Tobias Robischon described the expansion as an important step in closing a gap in the cycle path concept around Michelstadt.

An important connection

The new route offers a direct connection to the Hessian long-distance cycle path R4, which stretches over around 400 kilometers from Bad Karlshafen to the Neckar. From the heart of Michelstadt, this cycle path is a car-free connection to, for example, Bad König. The beauty of the surrounding area is an additional highlight for all cyclists and nature lovers who want to explore this route. The R4 long-distance cycle path not only traverses picturesque landscapes such as the Odenwald, but also numerous sights such as the Rapunzel Tower in Trendelburg and the Sleeping Beauty Castle in Sababurg.

The R4 doesn't just have sporty dimensions. With an altitude difference of 3,551 m ascent and 3,521 m descent, it is a real challenge for experienced cyclists. The communities along the route, including Bad Karlshafen, Michelstadt and Hirschhorn, offer numerous opportunities for refreshment and relaxation.

Financing and outlook

The total costs for the construction work on Zeller Straße amount to around 320,000 euros. A large part of the financing, namely 75 percent, is taken over by the state of Hesse as part of the cycle path concept for the Odenwald district. The project was coordinated by the city's building department and shows once again how important it is to promote environmentally friendly transport routes.

For anyone who would like to explore the surrounding area on two wheels, the new cycle and footpath on Zeller Straße offers a welcome expansion of the cycle path network in and around Michelstadt. An all-round successful project that will be of great benefit to both locals and visitors.
