German companies in rethinking: Cloud strategy on the brink!
Pfungstadt, Deutschland - More and more companies in Germany are rethinking their cloud strategy and the associated dependency on US providers. A current survey by Techconsult on behalf of Eperi shows that around 48.4 % of the companies surveyed are in a phase of reorientation. The public sector in particular seems to be active here, with a value of 65.2 % and in the healthcare system even 33.3 % of companies that are looking for alternatives to US clouds.
But what does the trust look like? Only 33.2 % of those surveyed state that they have confidence in US cloud providers, while 19.9 % report on loss of trust. Despite these concerns, 80.6 % of companies still rely on services such as Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure, often due to a lack of European alternatives. The question arises: why is that?
The pressure grows
A central reason for rethinking are the increasing requirements for data protection and digital sovereignty. Data is considered the "new oil" and the legal situation is anything but easy. The cloud act allows US authorities to access data to US companies, even if they are stored in Europe. This ensures a queasy feeling, especially for sensitive data that is processed, for example, in healthcare or financial sector.
Despite server locations in the EU, the risk of access by US authorities remains. Critics warn that even the introduction of the "EU-US-US Data Privacy Framework" cannot clear all concerns in July 2023. The ECJ has declared earlier agreements invalid, which further increases the uncertainties. Data protection authorities advise companies to prioritize alternative providers that act under the strict data protection standards of the GDPR.
alternatives in Europe
In view of these challenges, 20 % of companies are actively looking for European cloud alternatives. And the industry is already reacting: Microsoft has announced extensive investments in Europe. These include not only the expansion of the cloud infrastructure by 40 % in the next two years, but also the securing of source code in Switzerland to take into account the regional needs.However, the companies are facing a dilemma: Anyone who uses US cloud services can suddenly be affected by US authorities without warning. To counteract this, it is advisable to implement technical countermeasures such as end-to-end encryption and hybrid solutions. It is also advisable to choose a cloud provider based in the EU and ensure that strict order processing contracts are observed.
company trust in US cloud providers (%) | active search for European alternatives (%) Th> | |
---|---|---|
total | 33.2 | 20 |
public sector | 65.2 | actively search |
healthcare | 33.3 | actively search |
The need for an independent cloud infrastructure, which is both technically and legally confident, is undeniable. European providers should therefore be preferred to ensure trust, data protection and digital competitiveness.
With these developments it becomes clear: The digital age not only demands technology knowledge from the companies, but also strategic thinking and foresight. If you have a good hand here, you could soon be ahead.
