Safe roads for everyone: Traffic education for refugees in Groß-Umstadt

A tragic incident in Groß-Umstadt in early March shaked the company. A child died near a shared accommodation for refugees. In response to this, the department of immigration and refugees from the Darmstadt-Dieburg district organized a special traffic education for children and parents from this accommodation. Rosario Cammalleri, who launched the initiative, emphasized the importance of sustainable support for the families. This goes beyond simple traffic rules: it is about security and mobility in everyday life.

Traffic education was launched together with the South Hesse police headquarters and aims to improve the knowledge of the traffic rules. As the Euroakademie explains, it is of great importance that children are prepared for the dangers in road traffic in the earliest phase of life. Statistics show that a large part of the accidents pass when crossing the road and that children are often overwhelmed in complex traffic situations.

Important steps for traffic education

The German traffic watch has been offering programs for years that promote playful learning of traffic rules. An example of this is the cycling training, which usually takes place in the third or fourth grade. But children shouldn't learn that in primary school: traffic education should start in kindergarten. There, funding takes place in perception, communication and movement, which is crucial for traffic safety. The darkness during the winter months as well as rain and snow also increase the danger potential for our little ones.

The handout "Make sure that community accommodation" by the [police] (https://www.polizei-beratung.de/aktuelles/detailsicht/gemeinschaften-fuer-fluechte-sichert- designer offers comprehensive information on the construction of secure accommodations. It supports to develop and implement protective concepts - a concept that is also important for safety in road traffic. The minimum standards developed by the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth in cooperation with Unicef and other partners are to be implemented in refugee accommodation in Germany and offer important orientation for operators.

The combination of traffic education and security in shared accommodation is urgently necessary. With so many challenges with which refugee families are confronted, it is all the more important to offer them accidental reliability. Traffic education is not just a measure, but part of a comprehensive approach to integration and protection for children in road traffic. The initiative in Groß-Umstadt shows how important it is to make the circumstances forward-looking in order to avoid such tragic incidents in the future
