Groß-Umstadt celebrates wine festival: Portuguese flair and variety of wines!

In the charming town of Groß-Umstadt in Hesse, the connection to Portugal comes into its own in a very special way. Known as the home of the largest Portuguese community in Hesse, the city offers a lively cultural scene and exciting culinary highlights. The official partnership with the wine town of Santo Tirso underlines this close bond and attracts numerous visitors. Groß-Umstadt has established itself not only as a “wine island in the Odenwald”, but also as a place where Portuguese flair can be experienced. The "Costa Verde" restaurant invites you to feast with typical Portuguese and Spanish specialties such as fish, seafood and of course port wine and galão.

The tradition of viticulture has a long history in Groß-Umstadt, dating back to 775 AD. Over 85 hectares of wine-growing area belong to the “Hessische Bergstrasse”, the smallest wine-growing region in Germany, where a large number of grape varieties have always been cultivated. The main varieties include Riesling, Silvaner and Pinot Blanc, with Red Riesling, a rarity from the Middle Ages, receiving particular attention. The wine-growing region is known for its resilient vines and is part of a tradition dating back over 2,000 years to the Romans.

A feast for the senses

Every year the wine festival in September is a highlight of the city. Every third weekend in September, the historic center of Groß-Umstadt is transformed into a festive venue full of life. The festival is opened every Friday at 9 p.m. by Mayor René Kirch and the reigning wine authorities. Visitors can visit wine stalls, enjoy live music and have fun partying around the market square. The numerous stalls and rides not only invite visitors to enjoy regional wines, but also to look and marvel.

As in the previous year, numerous traditional highlights will be on offer this time too. These include the official reception of the twin cities on Friday evening, the celebratory coronation evening on Saturday evening and the big pageant on Sunday. For the little visitors there is a children's wine festival on Saturday lunchtime in the garden of the Protestant town church, where the focus is on fun and games. The Umstadt Wine Festival not only supports the wineries, but also local associations and volunteer groups - because the wine is served exclusively in the current wine festival glass.

A look at the region

Groß-Umstadt is not only known for its wine festival, but also for the numerous opportunities that the region has to offer. Wine hiking trails and the wine educational trail invite you to get to know the local wine varieties and traditional wine growing better. In addition, the historic market square with cobblestones and the four-tube fountain offers many attractions for tourists. The Protestant town church with its wall paintings from 1465 to 1494 is also worth a visit.

The city's active cultural scene provides entertainment with cabaret, jazz lounge and children's theater - all in a family-friendly atmosphere. Groß-Umstadt, with its mix of Portuguese flair and Hessian wine-growing culture, offers something for everyone and warmly welcomes all visitors to enjoy locally produced wines and experience the Odenwald mentality up close.
