District council is right for more budget freedom at the District Administrator Gruber School!

In an intensive meeting of the district council, a joint application by the SPD and CDU for the district administrator-Gruber school was discussed today, on June 17, 2025. This application aims to enable the school more independence in budget questions and to provide additional funds for the years 2026 to 2028. The Main Echo reports that the application was accepted by a large majority, but not without an extensive debate among the members of the district council, which was the longest discussion of the day.

The application consists of two central parts: On the one hand, a budget agreement between the district council and the district administrator Gruber school is required, which should apply from January 1, 2026. This agreement is intended to enable the school to expand expanded independence in the event of procurement. On the other hand, an annual assignment of 100,000 euros for the household years 2026 to 2028 is required to improve the school equipment. The aim of these additional means is to strengthen the vocational training of specialists in regional companies.

Although the decision package was supported by the larger political groups, including the Greens, the FDP and the AfD, some members expressed significant concerns. Martin Tichy from the Greens noted that it was not the matter itself, but the process. Ingo Jeromin from the FDP pointed out that it was problematic if politics specifically support individual schools, as this could act as a precedent. John Kraft also criticized the free voters and the UGW that the application should have been brought in as an administrative template by the school department.

The question remains whether other schools will strive for similar improvements. The pressure on politics will increase, especially if one looks at the ongoing discussions about the independence of schools. In this context, the GREEN have been calling for more freedom for schools for quality improvement in education in the Hessian state parliament for some time. In her concept paper "Hessen's way to self -employed schools" it is emphasized that schools should be freed from centralistic requirements.

Reform of school structures

The need for a reform in the education system is not new. Educational experts have the opinion that strengthening schools on site would lead to better educational results. In principle, however, the state remains responsible for the determination of the educational goals, appropriate financing and the structural development of the school system.
