Construction work burdens rail traffic: commuters have to master summer chaos!

With the arrival of the summer holidays in Hesse, an extensive phase of construction and renovation work on the railway lines, which commuters and travelers presents great challenges. From July 4, 2025, many train drivers have to be prepared for diversions, replacement traffic and partly train failures. According to Tagesschau , the Hessian ICE routes are largely unaffected, with the exception of less targeted interventions.

Restrictions and replacement traffic

A number of regional routes are particularly affected, which are severely restricted until August. A systematic overview shows which routes and periods are affected:

  • Gelnhausen - Gießen: RB46, until August 18, train cancellations due to construction work and unoccupied signal boxes, replacement traffic by bus.
  • Wiesbaden - Troisdorf: June to December, general renovation of the right Rhine route, especially in regional transport RB 10.
  • Frankfurt-Höchst-Wiesbaden: June 13 to August 21, modernization of signal box technology with nightly closures and replacement traffic.
  • Frankfurt - Mainz: June 21 to July 18, Restrictions on the Re2, Re4, RE14.
  • Gießen - Fulda: July 4th to August 26th, partial failures for work on the signal box.
  • Schwalmstadt-Treysa-Kirchhain: July 12th to August 4th, several weekend closures.

The list does not claim to be complete, but it makes it clear that many travelers in the region have to adapt to alternative transport offers.

exclusively bus traffic on certain routes

For the locked railway lines, replacement buses are used, some of which also have different routes. The regional transport company has already reacted to this and informed under Statista , transport on the rail is viewed as an important step to reduce CO₂ emissions, which underlines the need for such construction measures.

As difficult as it may be for commuters and travelers at the moment, the investments in the rail infrastructure are a necessary evil to ensure the importance of the train for our mobility in the long term. It is to be hoped that the measures will be implemented quickly, so that future trips will be more smooth.
