Construction work puts a strain on rail traffic: commuters have to cope with summer chaos!

With the arrival of the summer holidays in Hesse, an extensive phase of construction and renovation work begins on the railway lines, which poses major challenges for commuters and travelers. From July 4, 2025, many train drivers will have to be prepared for diversions, replacement services and some train cancellations. Loud daily news The Hessian ICE routes are largely untouched by the work, with the exception of a few targeted interventions.

Restrictions and alternative traffic

A number of regional routes are particularly affected and will be severely restricted until August. A systematic overview shows which routes and periods are affected:

  • Gelnhausen – Gießen: RB46, bis 18. August, Zugausfälle wegen Bauarbeiten und unbesetzter Stellwerke, Ersatzverkehr mit Bussen.
  • Wiesbaden – Troisdorf: Juni bis Dezember, Generalsanierung der rechten Rheinstrecke, insbesondere im Regionalverkehr RB 10.
  • Frankfurt-Höchst – Wiesbaden: 13. Juni bis 21. August, Modernisierung der Stellwerkstechnik mit nächtlichen Sperrungen und Ersatzverkehr.
  • Frankfurt – Mainz: 21. Juni bis 18. Juli, Einschränkungen auf den Verbindungen RE2, RE4, RE14.
  • Gießen – Fulda: 4. Juli bis 26. August, Teilausfälle wegen Arbeiten am Stellwerk.
  • Schwalmstadt-Treysa – Kirchhain: 12. Juli bis 4. August, mehrere Wochenendsperrungen.

The list does not claim to be complete, but it makes it clear that many travelers in the region have to adapt to alternative transport options.

Only bus services on certain routes

Replacement buses are used for the closed railway routes, some of which also have different routes. The regional transport company has already responded to this and is providing information below nvv.de about additional construction work that will take place from January 4th to January 10th, 2025.

The most important changes include:

  • Entfall von Zügen zwischen Wabern und Kassel.
  • Schienenersatzverkehr (SEV) ohne Zwischenhalte zwischen Wabern und Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe.
  • Probleme bei der Anbindung für Fahrgäste in Kassel-Oberzwehren, die verstärkt auf Tram und Bus zurückgreifen müssen.

Rail as an environmentally friendly means of transport

Despite the inconvenience, rail transport also benefits the climate: climate change is increasing the importance of environmentally friendly transport solutions, and the federal government has launched initiatives to make rail more attractive and to place a significantly greater focus on rail infrastructure. Loud Statista Rail transport is seen as an important step in reducing CO₂ emissions, which underlines the need for such construction measures.

As difficult as it may be for commuters and travelers at the moment, investments in rail infrastructure are a necessary evil in order to secure the importance of rail for our mobility in the long term. It remains to be hoped that the measures will be implemented quickly so that future journeys run more smoothly.
