Afroland Festival in Fulda: A celebration of African culture and cuisine!
What's new in Fulda? It's that time again: The Afroland Festival opens its doors and brings a piece of Africa to the cathedral city. The event is taking place for the second time this year and promises to delight visitors with music, cuisine and art from June 12th to 13th. This time the university square and the museum courtyard will be the setting for two days full of African culture. Last year, over 2,000 ticket buyers were impressed by the colorful mix of offers and live performances, and a high number of visitors can be expected this year too. East Hesse News reports on exciting program items and artists who shape the festival.
Baye Cheikh Matala Mbaye, who organizes the festival, has focused on promoting cultural exchange. With a great line-up, he not only attracts the African community, but also everyone who is interested. Exciting Afrobeats artists will perform on the live stage in the museum courtyard, including INNOSS’B from the Congo, Skales from Nigeria, known for his hit “Shake Body”, as well as the Angolan artist Scro Que Cuia and the Berlin collective Freak de l’Afrique. The musical highlight begins on Friday, June 13th, at 4 p.m. and lasts until 11 p.m. Before that, there will be a warm-up event on Thursday from 11 a.m. on University Square.
Culinary delicacies and handicrafts
The festival not only offers musical delicacies, but also culinary highlights. Visitors can enjoy exquisite African specialties in the stalls. James Sibah, head chef at an African catering company, will offer traditional dishes, including the popular fried plantains in tomato and ginger sauce. The East African dish “Ful” and numerous snacks from Eritrea and Sudan are also on the menu. This makes the festival a real culinary delight.
The diversity of the Afroland Festival extends beyond just the stomach. Crafts, African jewelry, clothing and bags from women's projects offer visitors a wonderful opportunity to take a piece of Africa home with them. Djembe workshops with Baye Cheikh Matala Mbaye and the presentation of a traditional Ethiopian-Eritrean coffee ceremony by Mosob Suki round off the offering. A great supporting program is offered on the university square with bands such as Abass Kakatar, Balla Ranks and Mato Triolo. Admission to the musical performances on this square is even free, which adds even more charm to the event. Fulda newspaper highlights the importance of this holistic affair for integration and cultural coexistence.
Party until late into the night
The festival is not limited to musical performances. On Friday evening there will be an after-show party at the Kreuz Cultural Center in Fulda-Horas, which starts at 11 p.m. and is sure to provide many unforgettable moments. Another highlight that festival visitors shouldn’t miss!
With such a diverse mix of music, food and culture, the Afroland Festival is just right. The organizers have a good knack for not only creating a platform for African artists, but also contributing to intercultural exchange.
