In Witzenhausen, an important step was recently taken for the future of the after-school care center at the St. Jakob children's home. The Together for Witzenhausen initiative presented an impressive 812 signatures in front of the town hall to preserve the after-school care center. Under the motto “Prevent social cuts – preserve after-school care!” Citizens expressed their commitment and concern about possible cuts in education and care. The after-school care center, which offers space for up to 40 children, will not only be retained, but will also be designed to be inclusive. In the future, the city, the Catholic Church and the parents will share the financing and operating costs of the after-school care center. However, the city had previously considered stopping the voluntary payment of around 200,000 euros. A new concept now stipulates that the city's participation is limited to 60,000 euros, which corresponds to an amount of 1,500 euros per child.
A good compromise for everyone involved
The city of Witzenhausen plans to terminate the existing contract with the Catholic Church and draw up a new one. This provides for the costs to be divided into three equal parts. During a previous meeting of the Social Committee, concerns were raised about this termination before the new contract comes into force. Nevertheless, the Bunte List's request not to terminate the contract was rejected with 25 out of 27 votes. Bertram Schäfer from the Greens emphasized the urgency of a quick decision to save the hoard.
The St. Jakob children's home is an ecumenical institution that is run by the Catholic and Protestant churches and the city. In addition to the after-school care center, there is also a play area that can accommodate 24 children and offers many exciting activities, such as playing together and singing. A special feature of the after-school care center is the parents' café, which invites parents to network in a friendly atmosphere, exchange ideas and maintain old contacts. This offer not only strengthens togetherness, but also supports parents in their everyday lives. Maintaining the after-school care center is therefore not just a question of childcare places, but also a means of strengthening the community in Witzenhausen.
