Serious crash on B 452: Car hits tree and catches fire!

A serious traffic accident today turned the federal highway 452 between Eschwege and Reichensachsen into a scene of horror. According to Tixio, a car left the road and crashed head-on into a tree. The impact was so violent that the vehicle caught fire shortly afterwards.

The fire brigade and rescue workers rushed to the scene immediately to bring the situation under control and coordinate the recovery of the vehicle. The federal highway is completely closed in the affected section, which is significantly affecting traffic. Police are asking all road users to take alternative routes and avoid the closed route while the accident investigation and recovery work continues. What is striking is that the exact cause of the accident is still completely unclear.

The condition on the roads up close

Unfortunately, traffic accidents are one of the sad realities of road traffic. Every year in the EU, thousands of people die or suffer serious injuries in road accidents. According to European Parliament, the number of road deaths in 2019 was 22,800, which amounted to 18,800 in 2020. The 36 percent decline between 2010 and 2020 shows progress, but the death toll remains high. What is particularly tragic is that young people in the 18 to 24 age group are disproportionately affected. This group accounted for 12 percent of traffic fatalities in 2018, even though they only make up 8 percent of the population.

The European Road Safety Observatory (ERSO) provides reliable data and analysis on these topics and helps to identify road safety problems. The latest figures show that road deaths in the EU fell by 3 percent in 2024, but overall progress in reducing accidents remains slow (ERSO).

Sweden has established itself as a leader in road safety, with just 18 road deaths per 1 million inhabitants, in contrast to Romania, where the rate is a shocking 85. The EU average is around 42 road deaths per 1 million inhabitants, while the global average is over 180. This shows the urgent need to further improve road safety on our roads.

Our thoughts go out to the victims of today's accident, whose fate is still uncertain. While the cause of the accident is being investigated, we appeal to all road users to drive carefully and attentively to avoid such tragedies in the future.
