Hesse Championships: Bronze and records for Waldeck-Frankenberg!

What's new from the athletics scene in Hesse? At the Hessian Relay Championships in Wetzlar, the local athletes impressively showed what they were made of. Three relay teams from the Waldeck-Frankenberg athletics district competed and won two medals - a result that is impressive!

The U16 relay, consisting of the talented athletes Feliz Nolte, Emilia Herlitz and Verena Schomberg, secured the bronze medal in the 3x800 meter race with an impressive time of 8:19.45 minutes. Each of the young athletes ran around 2:45 minutes, and Verena made the crucial difference at the finish, clinching the medal by just two seconds. That’s exactly what we want to see – team spirit and perseverance!

Records and disappointments

To everyone's delight, there was also a new district record! The U20 Swedish relay team, consisting of Lisa Schiffmann, Karolina Bauer, Ylva Eigenbrodt and Pauline Wilhelm, clocked a time of 2:27.61 minutes. Despite this great performance, it wasn't enough for a medal, and the team ended up in fourth place, just 1.2 seconds behind bronze.

There was another interesting twist in the LG Eder M50 relay. Thorsten Kramer ran the final stretch of the 3x1000 meter race and finished with a time of 10:11.94 minutes. The team was only 1.4 seconds behind the winner TSV Pfungstadt. The athletes were clearly dissatisfied with an unfortunate change that potentially cost them the gold medal.

Medals on the international stage

In addition to these exciting competitions, we take a look beyond the borders. Pia Meßing from TV Gladbeck and Joana Herrmann from SV Teuto Riesenbeck won medals at the U20 European Athletics Championships in Israel at the beginning of August. Messing won the silver medal in the heptathlon, while Herrmann came third in the high jump. Both athletes described their experiences with warm words: Meßing felt particularly emotionally supported by the presence of her parents, while Herrmann found the atmosphere communal and uplifting.

What will happen next for the two talents? Meßing plans to prove himself at the German All-Around Championships in September in Hanover and is also aiming to qualify for the World Championships in Peru in 2024. Herrmann is also looking into the future, with goals such as the German indoor championships and the U23 DM.

A passion for athletics is an essential part of their lives - both are students and juggle training with school obligations. What is particularly impressive is how they motivate each other. Meßing cheers on her colleague during the competition, which also motivates Herrmann.

The world of athletics is varied and presents athletes with challenges that allow them to constantly grow. We can soon look forward to seeing what the next competitions have in store for our local talents!
