New Makerspace in Schwalmstadt: The future of digital education begins!

What a day for Schwalmstadt! A new makerspace was opened on November 2nd, 2025, which will certainly inspire the creativity and innovative strength of the students in the Schwalm-Eder district. This is the fourth makerspace in the region, and it has been specifically designed as a learning and experimentation space focused on digital technologies. Here, young talents have the opportunity to deal with fascinating topics such as 3D printing, virtual reality and robotics in order to further develop their digital skills.

Representatives of the Ostergrund school, which offers the “Digital World” subject, were present at the opening. Among them the rector Dr. Michaela Stommel, as well as the specialist teachers Bernd Itzenhäuser and Stefanie Strasser, who were able to take a closer look at the new offer. This makerspace will not only serve as a creative space for students, but also provide an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a constantly evolving digital environment. District Administrator Winfried Becker also emphasized the importance of such practice-oriented learning locations, which are crucial for the training of digital skills.

Technical equipment for all schools

The opening was attended by Karl Hellweg, the head of the media center, and Ms. Wilhelmi, a representative of the Hessian Teaching Academy. Another highlight for the district’s schools: All institutions that teach the subject “Digital World” receive the basic equipment for technological projects. These include five Calliope mini and five Calli:bot robots, which allow students to immerse themselves in the world of programming and sensor technology.

The makerspace is not only open to schools in the immediate area, but also acts as a central learning location for digital education in the entire Schwalm-Eder district. Students can not only express their creativity here, but also actively promote the innovative strength that is in demand today. A great step towards future-oriented education!

The possibilities offered by this innovative space are almost limitless. Whether as a platform for group projects or as a place for individual experiments - the new makerspace is a promising place that takes learning to a whole new level. The school community can look forward to seeing what creative ideas and technologies will emerge from this space of knowledge in the coming months.
