Kassel in copper fever: Exploration start in North Hesse!
Vellmar, Deutschland - The search for copper, one of the most sought -after raw materials of our time, could soon win in northern Hesse. An Australian mining company, GreenX Metals Ltd. on June 9, 2025 secured the right to explore for an almost 2000 square kilometer in the region. The municipalities of Helsa, Lohfelden and purchase are at the center of the exploration work.
The main goal of the company is to find copper, but also gold, silver, Germanium, cobalt and other important minerals. The exploration area "Tannenberg 2" extends over a part of around 1700 square kilometers and is located on the northwest edge of the larger license area. An adjacent piece, "Tannenberg 1", which is located in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district, has an exciting mining tradition: Here, copper has been broken down, until 1955 the last active work was stopped. But the copper deposits there are still not exhausted.
historical background and current explorations
Historical data from the Richelsdorf area show promising copper content that can reach up to 3.7 percent. Current calculations indicate that a copper content of 0.5 percent could already be economically for underground mining. In recent years, Group 11 Exploration GmbH has done experimentation in "Tannenberg 1", which also included the use of a helicopter for rock analysis with magnetometers.
raw material protection in Hessen
The initiative for searching for raw materials in North Hesse is not only a project for companies, but is also in the context of the protection of raw materials, which is of crucial importance for the economic independence of Germany. The Hessian Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment, supported by the Geological State Service, actively pursues raw material protection in the region. The exploration data for the state planning of space are essential.
The specialist information system raw materials (FISROH) serves as a central source of information that provides the economy and research with crucial data. Thanks to a linked GIS system, relevant areas and raw material reserves are systematically displayed.
While exploration is so far at an early stage, this advance from GreenX Metals Ltd. change the raw material profile in Hesse sustainably. Depending on the results of the explorations and the public reactions, a new era of mining could begin, which could not only boost the local economy, but also help to advance Germany on the way to the independence of raw materials.
