Tragic drama in Kassel: woman dies after tram accident!
On Friday, September 22, 2025, a tragic accident occurred at the “Am Stern” stop in Kassel at around 11:50 a.m., in which a 26-year-old woman was fatally injured. It is believed that the woman had previously climbed over the coupling between two stationary wagons to cross the tracks. While she was crossing the tracks, the tram started moving out of town and the woman lost her balance. She fell under the vehicle and sustained such serious injuries that she died at the scene of the accident, as HNA reports.
Eyewitnesses reported that the woman was dragged a few meters by the tram, which made the event even more dramatic. The driver of the tram and several witnesses suffered shock and had to be cared for. Due to the incident, the area around the accident site was closed until 2:40 p.m., which also had an impact on bus and tram traffic in the city center. The police have already called in an expert to reconstruct the exact course of the accident.
Consequences and further misfortunes
The deceased woman's relatives had not been informed at the time of reporting and police are appealing for information from other witnesses who witnessed the incident. Similar tragedies have occurred in the past. A 59-year-old died in July 2024 at the “Walther-Schücking-Platz” stop and an 81-year-old died in June 2022 at the “Weserspitze” stop. Some local transport companies use technical solutions to prevent people from climbing over couplings, but such accidents cannot be ruled out.
In addition to the fatal accident in Kassel, there were two other incidents on the same day. On the morning of September 22nd, at 8:20 a.m., two trams collided at the “Schulzentrum Brückenhof” stop in the Oberzwehren district. A total of 13 people were injured in this accident, including students and the driver of the tram that was hit. Four of the injured were taken to hospital as a precaution. The police have not yet been able to clarify how this collision occurred or whether one of the vehicles was stationary. The total damage to the two trams is estimated to be in the high six-figure to seven-figure range, as Hessenschau reports.
More traffic accidents
A second accident occurred around the same time in Niederzwehren: There was a collision between a tram and a car. The 41-year-old driver wanted to turn around and drove over the tracks when the tram approached. Despite emergency braking, the collision could not be prevented. The driver was seriously but not life-threateningly injured, while the tram passengers were uninjured. The total economic loss to the car is estimated at 5,000 euros, the damage to the tram is around 10,000 euros. The fire brigade's rescue and recovery work took about an hour and a half, after which the road was reopened.
