Customs Championships in Baunatal: Sporting spirit promotes unity!
Around 2,000 customs officers from all over Germany traveled to Baunatal to take part in the 18th Customs Championships in 2025. The event, which has been organized by the German Customs Sports Aid (DZSH) since 2007, serves not only for sporting activities, but also for exchange and solidarity among customs officials. The championship recently celebrated its start and promises a weekend full of excitement in twelve different sports.
The spectrum of announced disciplines ranges from beach volleyball and football to several athletics disciplines such as long jump and high jump as well as various sprint distances. Here the participants can compete in teams, whereby beach volleyball, for example, is played in a two-on-two format up to a score of 15. The atmosphere is great, fueled by friends and colleagues who loudly support the athletes.
Sporting diversity and team spirit
The customs championships offer an excellent opportunity for customs officers to leave their often work-intensive everyday lives behind and focus on the joy of sport. An example of the enthusiasm is Marcus Oschlies from Berlin, whose high jump was applauded by many spectators. Kristina Martin from Schweinfurt also stands out, dedicating herself to three disciplines: sprint, shot put and long jump.
The team spirit among the officials is strengthened through joint training and frequent contact before and during the competitions. The focus is on pulling together, which makes the customs championships a unique event. The participants not only come from all over Germany, but also bring with them memories of training times together.
What awaits the athletes?
Some exciting competitions have already taken place on Friday, July 11, 2025. In volleyball, there were two halls that were played at the same time, with a dedicated team of helpers making sure everything ran smoothly. The first athletes have already taken part in athletic disciplines such as three-way combat, high jump and sprints. A well-planned supporting program ensures that the athletes get their money's worth, both athletically and socially.
The customs administration has also undertaken a lot in the area of top-class sport. Skiing has been promoted among customs officers since 1952, with the Customs Ski Team currently comprising 74 members. This structure allows talent to be discovered and supported. The disciplines of alpine, biathlon, cross-country skiing, ski jumping and Nordic combined are promoted with special consideration for athletes with disabilities, which underlines the importance of sport in customs administration.
“We attach great importance to offering customs officers professional opportunities and at the same time the chance of sporting success,” explains a spokesman for the customs administration. The composition of the teams shows that the customs administration is not only a big family, but also a place where sport and work can go hand in hand.
