German orchestra competition 2025: Love of music returns after nine years!
An exciting week is imminent music lovers in Hesse! From June 14th to 18th, 2025, the German orchestra competition will take place in the cities of Wiesbaden, Mainz and Ingelheim. It is the first presence event of this kind in nine years, and 98 orchestras from all over Germany have announced their coming, as reported [HR2]. Around 4,000 musicians are expected to fight in 16 categories for prices with a total value of 70,000 euros.
The competition is financed not only by the federal government, but also by the countries of Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate, which underlines the importance of this event. In addition to the musical performances, there will be a varied supporting program that increases the anticipation for the talented orchestral musicians. Susanne Pütz and Maximilian Peter Live report on the event and offer interviews with organizers, jury members and participants.
first performance in Wiesbaden
The Wiesbaden premiere of Francesco Durante's "Lamentations", which will be presented on June 28 by the Schiersteiner Kantorei and the baroque ensemble La Vivezza, is particularly worth mentioning. For this, the musicians have made a copy of the historical grades. Clemens Bosselmann, who heads the Schiersteiner Kantorei, will explain the preparations and the context of this unique performance. The Schiersteiner Kantorei has other plans that have been in the pipeline for a long time. On September 26, 2025, Antonio Vivaldi's works will take place in the Eberbach Monastery. Among other things, the Gloria, the violin concert "Il Grosso Mogul" and the Sinfonia de "L’Olimpiade" are on the program. Under the direction of Bosselmann, visitors can look forward to a top -class line -up that soprano Annemarie Pfahler and mezzo -soprano Sophie Wenzel belong.
tribute to Prof. Hubert Buchberger
The music week is also overshadowed by a sad loss. On June 5, 2025, Prof. Hubert Buchberger died, an important violinist and conductor who shaped the Hessian music life for many years. He became known as the founder of the Buchberg quartet in 1974 and as a professor at the Frankfurt University of Music, where he worked as Vice President for many years and established close contact with the music scene. This week will be in the program "Musikland Hessen", which will be broadcast on HR2 culture on June 14th at 3:04 p.m., with works by Joseph Haydn and W.A. Mozart reminded of him.
a comprehensive competition
For all interested orchestras, there is already important information from the preparations for the competition. On December 12, 2024, the nominated orchestras were informed and they had time until January 16, 2025. Deadlines such as the submission of repertoire and notes must be observed. The German Music Council is responsible for the administration and the lawful use of the grades, while the orchestras themselves are responsible for the procurement of necessary licenses, as is explained on [German orchestra competition].
The journey to the competitive location and logistics are not trivial. Overnight stays are organized via Mainzplus, although there are also grants - but only in the presentation of an invoice. This means that the orchestral musicians not only focus on music, but also on the practical side of participation in this great event.
A top -class music festival is imminent, and the bands and ensembles in Hessen jump directly into the competition, while at the same time the loss of Prof. Buchberger remains in the hearts of the musicians. Be there and support the musicians in your artistic efforts!
