Weißkirchen under water: residents urgently demand better protection!

in the Hochtaunus region, especially in Weißkirchen and Bommersheim, residents have to struggle again with the consequences of heavy rain. As the Fnp reported, criticized citizens criticize the insufficient flood protection in their districts. The situation after the rains on June 6, 2023 was particularly violent when the basement ran full in no time. Residents reported a pipe that initiates water into the Urselbach and creates problem cases in heavy rain.

The deputy mayor Ilja Moreth (Greens) addressed the worrying situation in a meeting and pointed out that the actual amounts of rain of up to 45 liters had serious consequences in a short time. The city administration argues that the criticized pipe is an approved inlet office for the retention basin, but many citizens are calling for a review of the 50 -year -old system, especially with regard to the new challenges of climate change.

flood protection under pressure

In the neighboring Bommersheim there were similar experiences. Here the residents report repeated flood events that led to full cellars. The mayor Steffen Wolf (OBG) made it clear that many citizens are affected and the situation exerts financial pressure on households, since insurance could possibly shorten or cancel. A commercial area nearby is brought into play as a possible cause of the flooding in the region.

The continued flood problems that have occurred over and over again in the past four years also raise questions about the structural conditions. The one-channel system seems to be overwhelmed in heavy rain. Mayor Antje Runge (SPD) explains that the amounts of water are surface water and refers to possible solutions such as the widening of the channels and conversion into a separation system. A new channel with a cross -section of 600 mm should soon go into operation, but the old pipes with 450 mm are still a challenge.

measures for improvement

The most urgent measures that are required in Weißkirchen and Bommersheim are a comprehensive control of all pipes and waterways as well as the continuation of the canal under Lange Strasse. A general flood analysis and preparatory projects such as cross -grooves and troughs in the adjacent forest should also lead to a better removal of rainwater. The citizens agree: flood protection must now be a priority! The concerned residents and the local advisory board require quick and effective measures to avoid further damage.

The challenges that climate change brings with it should not be underestimated. According to FR are simulations as part of a climate adaptation concept to be planned to to better prepare future storms. The next meeting with affected residents is in January - another step towards political and civil society determination to improve the situation.
