Renovation on Wilhelmsplatz: Work is on schedule!
Something is happening on Wilhelmsplatz in Offenbach! Since September 15th, the city has begun renovating the popular area, which is now making good progress. There's shoveling and hammering going on because work to repair damaged joints and loose paving is on the agenda. Around 4,000 square meters of natural stone area will be properly refreshed in four construction phases. The total costs for the project amount to around 750,000 euros, which the city officials have already carefully considered. As head of planning and construction Paul-Gerhard Weiß reports, the work is going according to plan and there will be no stop.
In the first steps, the paving stones were attached before the craftsmen set about blasting out the old joint material up to five centimeters deep. A newly mixed two-component material made of sand and epoxy resin is then distributed into the joints. This new joint material is frost-proof, water-permeable and resistant to high-pressure cleaning - for everyone who likes to see their spaces in the best light.
Current situation and challenges
The market on Wilhelmsplatz will continue to exist, which is important news for many stall operators. During the renovation, however, the market stalls have taken up space in the renovated part and in the parking area towards Bleichstrasse. Restaurants can also continue to serve their guests, but may have to forgo areas under the trees. The disruptions will be coordinated directly with the companies to ensure smooth processing.
A look at the changed parking regulations shows that there is a parking ban on market days (Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays) between 1 a.m. and 4 p.m. There could be tractor passes if parkers do not adhere to the regulations. There are only a limited number of spaces available on Wilhelmsplatz for those parking during the construction period. A good alternative is the parking garage in the city center, which is only a five-minute walk away and reacts dynamically to the construction period: free parking is offered from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and also on market days from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. - which makes the situation much more relaxed.
Planned completion and outlook
The city has set itself the goal of completing the renovation work by the end of November 2023. A test phase started a year ago with different joint materials in order to find the best possible one for Wilhelmsplatz. As the construction work progresses, we will be excited to see how the square can be revived, as the last redesign took place in 2010. With an attractive design, Wilhelmsplatz could certainly shine again as an attractive meeting place in Offenbach.
Current information about the measure and an overview of the market stalls can be found on the official city website of Offenbach. If you would like to find out more about it, you are welcome to delve into the details, as there is a lot on offer here for all Offenbach residents and visitors. It remains exciting to see what Wilhelmsplatz has to offer after the renovation work - we can look forward to it!
