World War II bomb in Hanau: Experts defuse danger in the afternoon!
A recently discovered World War II bomb is once again causing a stir in Hanau. On June 13, 2025, workers came across the 50 kilogram American bomb during exploratory work in an industrial area in the Wolfgang district. The explosive ordnance disposal service of the state of Hesse was quickly deployed to eliminate the potential danger. At 5:44 p.m. the bomb was successfully defused without any serious incidents occurring.
As Vorsprung Online reports, an evacuation radius of 500 meters was set around the site. Fortunately, no residential buildings had to be evacuated, which should certainly reassure residents. Nevertheless, Aschaffenburger Straße between Rodenbacher Chaussee and Neuwirtshäuser Straße had to be closed for the duration of the operation. Hanauer Straßenbahn GmbH also had to suspend bus route 11.
Focus on professional efficiency and safety
The dedicated work of the emergency services was recognized by city councilor Isabelle Hemsley (CDU), who praised the professional effort. Since no volunteers had to be mobilized in this case, everything went relatively smoothly and the population was able to calm down quite quickly. Nevertheless, the incident is a reminder that defusing World War II bombs still represents a serious risk today.
Similar incidents have not been uncommon in Hanau in recent months. According to Fuldaer Zeitung, bombs from the Second World War were repeatedly found in the region, which often resulted in larger evacuations. The effect of such operations in other cities, such as Cologne, where several hundred thousand people were recently affected by evacuations, shows the seriousness of the situation. The measures in Cologne are particularly notable because tens of thousands of people there had to leave their homes due to defusing measures.
This incident should remind us that the legacies of war can continue to surface long after the conflict has ended. The work of the explosive ordnance disposal service is therefore of great importance in order to ensure the safety of the population.
