Bad Orb now surfs for free: Five new WiFi hotspots launched!

Something is really happening in Bad Orb: five public WiFi hotspots have now been put into operation. This initiative comes from the Hessian Ministry for Digitalization and Innovation and is part of the extensive WLAN funding for Hessian municipalities. The new hotspots are strategically positioned in central locations: the bus station, Untertor, Salinenplatz, reading hall and concert hall now form a network of free internet access. Further hotspots are planned for the market square and Solplatz in the near future, which will be activated once the construction work is completed. Access is very straightforward via the “Hessen-WLAN” network. Users simply have to accept the terms of use to access the Internet for free.

But that's not enough. Loud digital.hessen.de More than 100 offices of the Hessian state administration are equipped with over 800 Hesse WiFi hotspots. The goal is to provide all public facilities with free WiFi. This is an important step towards comprehensive, secure internet access in Hesse.

Benefits for citizens and businesses

Why is this so important? Well, the pandemic has shown how crucial digital infrastructures are. Mobile working has now become part of everyday life for many people. Stable, secure WiFi networks are essential for this. Public Wi-Fi networks not only offer advantages to citizens, but also to businesses: increased quality of stay and new sales opportunities are just some of the positive effects.

The WiFi funding program “Digitale Dorflinde” shows how serious Hesse is about expanding the digital infrastructure. Since 2018, 3,000 hotspots have already been approved under this program, with over 20 million user accesses by the end of 2022.

Future of WLAN expansion

The funding per hotspot has been increased to 1,500 euros, and up to 40 hotspots are eligible for funding for each municipality. These measures triple the funding volume to up to 60,000 euros. This helps ensure that rural regions can also benefit from comprehensive WiFi, a central goal of Hesse's gigabit strategy.

The service point in the Hessian data processing center also supports the planning and organization of the establishment of new hotspots. The entire project will be funded by the Hessian Digital Ministry until the end of 2023, with construction planning for all locations scheduled to be completed by the second quarter of 2023.

Bad Orb is not only a place where you can unwind, but also one that is future-oriented. The new WiFi hotspots are a step in the right direction - we can only hope that many citizens and visitors will enjoy free access and thus promote digital encounters in the city.
