World Population Day: Hesse is booming with 1.35 million foreigners!

In Hesse, the diversity of the population is celebrated on July 11th, World Population Day. A current evaluation by the Hessian State Statistical Office impressively shows that people from 195 different countries currently live here. This is not a given, but the result of over 1.35 million foreigners who were counted in Hesse in 2024. Over the last ten years, the number of the foreign population has increased by an impressive 56.7 percent, which shows how dynamically our society is developing. Turkish citizens in particular form the largest group with 166,900 people. FAZ reports that in second place are citizens of Ukraine, followed by Romanian citizens.

Like many other cities in Germany, Frankfurt am Main also reflects this diversity. 18.9 percent of all people without German citizenship live here. In the Offenbach district it is 6.9 percent, followed by the Main-Kinzig district with 6.7 percent. If you don't stop looking at the foreign population at nationality, but also look at origin, you can see a significant increase in Ukrainian citizens. The Ukraine conflict has resulted in refugee migration, which is driving up the numbers sharply. In 2021, around 11,000 people from Ukraine still lived in Hesse, and by the end of 2024 this number had risen to almost 105,000. An absolute record, as the data from the Federal Statistical Office confirms Hesse statistics.

The causes of migration

An expert might say that these developments are not accidental. The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine has led to a remarkable movement of refugees. In 2023 we counted almost a million people of Ukrainian origin seeking protection in Germany. This accounts for around 30.8 percent of all those seeking protection in Germany. It is therefore only logical that the statistics obtained show an increase not only in Hesse, but also in the Federal Republic in general Destatis.

While the number of Ukrainian refugees is impressive, it should not be forgotten that other nationalities also have their place in these statistics. At the end of 2023, Syrians were the largest group of those seeking protection. But this is not surprising when you consider that many conflicts threaten the lives of people in their homeland and they are looking for security. Afghan nationals are also strongly represented in Hesse, especially in urban areas such as Offenbach.

The demographic changes in Hesse are clearly noticeable. The integration and coexistence of these different cultures is a challenge, but also offers opportunities. Whether in the economy, education or social areas – diversity makes the state a lively place to live. Society certainly has a great responsibility here to shape this change positively.
