Forest fire warning in Wiesbaden: Barbecue ban for all places!
Today, July 2, 2025, the city of Wiesbaden raised the forest fire warning level from 2 to 4. This means a general ban on barbecues on all public barbecue areas located in and around the forest. rheinmainverlag.de reports that this ban also applies to gas grills. This means that the popular barbecue areas are closed until further notice. In addition, smokers are not allowed to smoke in the forest, as this is prohibited all year round.
The proper forces will carry out increased checks in the next few days to ensure compliance with these regulations. Organizers of events in areas close to forests are advised not to use charcoal grills. Grilling in pavilions or tents is also not permitted, while food trucks or trailers standing on solid ground are exempt from this ban.
Additional security measures
In order to further minimize the risks, the areas used for events must be adequately watered. Organizers must also ensure that additional extinguishing equipment such as fire extinguishers and filled water buckets are available. Grass areas also need to be well watered before events to reduce the risk of fire.
The setting off of fireworks and pyrotechnics is generally prohibited. If exceptions are desired, these must be agreed in advance with the environmental agency. Restaurants and allotment gardens within 100 meters of the forest as the crow flies are also not allowed to light fires or pyrotechnics. This is an important measure to further minimize the risk of forest fires.
Wildfire Danger Index Overview
The forest fire danger index (WBI), which is used by state authorities to assess fire risk, shows forest fire risks in five levels: from very low (level 1) to very high (level 5). The current level 4 already indicates a high risk. Information about this is updated daily and can be viewed on the website of the German Weather Service. This data serves as a basis for local authorities to assess the situation and take appropriate action.
For Hesse specifically, the forest fire danger indices for different stations are very different. Many areas, including Wesertal-Lippoldsberg andSchauenburg-Elgershausen, are currently classified at level 4, highlighting the high fire risk. Further details can be found at wetterfähren.de, where the current values for all federal states can be accessed.
The affected citizens and event participants are requested to inform themselves about the current developments and to take the authorities' instructions seriously. Only together can we reduce the risk of forest fires and protect our nature.
