Bad Homburg in focus: New rules for e-scooters on Louisenstrasse!

In Bad Homburg, things are trendy and lively again around Louisenstrasse. On May 22nd, Mayor Dr. Oliver Jedynak and representatives from the city and state police went on joint patrols to identify the challenges in the areas of order and traffic. Louisenstrasse, the heart of the city and a busy pedestrian zone, is under special observation as there have been increasing complaints about traffic violations here. In particular, the use of e-scooters and bicycles outside of permitted times caused dissatisfaction among residents and businesses. The city would like to ensure that traffic regulations are adhered to through an increased police and regulatory presence, which is of great importance for respectful coexistence in public spaces.

During the patrol, Mayor Jedynak emphasized the importance of strict regulations for a harmonious living environment and dialogue with citizens. An open ear for the concerns of city residents should help to improve the general conditions for all road users in this central area.

New regulations for e-scooters

E-scooters are usually the cause of heated discussions among the population. According to information from ADAC, these motorized scooters are now an integral part of traffic, but must be subject to strict rules. All e-scooters that are used legally require an operating license and are subject to compulsory insurance. In addition to usage, regulations from the Small Electric Vehicle Ordinance (EKFv) also regulate safety standards, such as liability insurance, which must be proven by a sticker.

An exciting innovation is in the starting blocks: a revision of the EKFv will come into force from April 2025. In the future, e-scooters will be allowed to drive where bicycle traffic is permitted and they must be equipped with indicators. Previously, a simple rule applied: E-scooters were only allowed to move on sidewalks and in pedestrian zones at walking speed. In addition, lawmakers are discussing increasing road safety in order to minimize accidents and a lack of strict liability for e-scooter drivers.

violation fine
Red at the traffic lights 60 to 180 euros
Driving on the sidewalk 15 to 30 euros
Driving without insurance 40 euros
Driving without an operating license 70 euros
Taking a second person with you 55 euros or more

The innovations also offer advantages for cities, which now have the opportunity to efficiently regulate the parking of rental scooters. In particular, driving next to each other should only be permitted if traffic is not obstructed - a measure that can make the flow of traffic considerably easier.

From April 2025, a fundamental change will be heralded for e-scooter users in Bad Homburg and throughout Germany. The combination of new traffic regulations, technical fine-tuning and an increased awareness of the traffic regulations could also help in the long term to make traffic and order in the city center more efficient. At the moment, all that remains for everyone involved is to wait and see how the announced changes will be felt in practice.
