Frankfurt's citizens pitch in: 77,000 illegal parking reports in a very short time!

In Frankfurt am Main, the digital reporting system for reporting illegal parking is widely used by citizens. Since the online portal was introduced in February 2022, around 77,000 reports have been filed against illegal parking - a number that exceeds the city's expectations. Over 12,000 private reports in 2024 alone show that there is great interest and that Frankfurters have a good knack for using this digital solution. As the World Reported violations are reported by uploading photos and specifying the location and time of the incident.

The portal allows users to select the specific crime themselves, be it a vehicle that is parked halfway on the sidewalk or one that is blocking a bicycle lane. This measure aims to increase the sensitivity of those who park illegally and to influence their behavior in traffic in the long term. The public order office also draws a positive conclusion: the processing rate is almost 100% and most of the advertisements can be used.

Progress in Hesse

Frankfurt is not alone when it comes to digital traffic control. Similar reporting portals are also in use in other Hessian cities such as Offenbach, Wiesbaden and Hanau. Since its introduction in October, 5,370 violations have already been registered in Offenbach. However, the public order office there can only use a third of the reports because many overlap with the work of the field service. Wiesbaden itself recorded around 3,200 reports last year, which shows that illegal parking is also being monitored here.

The numbers are clear: Frankfurt submitted 361 reports per 10,000 inhabitants in 2024, followed by Kassel with 300 and Darmstadt with 273. Hanau, Wiesbaden, Rüsselsheim, Fulda and other cities are also showing progress in educating and recording illegal parking, even if some do not yet have their own online reporting system or are only just planning one, as is the case hessenschau clarified.

A look forward

The approach to traffic monitoring through digital participation is a clear trend in Hesse. Cities like Kassel and Darmstadt show that they are also taking steps to make it easier for citizens to report illegal parking. The plans to introduce a reporting system are promising and could further improve the traffic situation in the future - because as the saying goes: you don't just get a good deal when shopping, but also in traffic!
