Unemployment in the Bergstrasse district is falling: hope for nursing staff!

The mood in the Bergstrasse district has recovered somewhat: In August 2025, 7,121 people were registered as unemployed, which means a decrease of 51 people compared to the previous month. But despite this small ray of hope, the number is still 253 people higher than last year, an increase of 3.7%. This means that the unemployment rate in the district remains at 4.7%, whereas it was 4.5% in the previous year. For comparison: In all of Hesse the rate is 6.0% and across Germany it is even 6.4%. Rheinmainverlag reports that the labor market situation is improving, but challenges still remain.

A current issue is the high demand for nursing staff in Hesse. Demographic change is ensuring that the need for nursing staff continues to grow. By 2040, an additional need of almost 8,000 geriatric nurses and around 4,000 full-time health and nursing staff is expected, which corresponds to an increase of around 55-56% compared to 2021. One reason for this increase is the age-related retirement of many employees from the profession. District Administrator Christian Engelhardt also emphasizes the importance of care and empathy in the nursing profession.

Commitment to the nursing profession

In order to counteract the shortage of skilled workers, the Bergstrasse district is committed to a comprehensive care campaign. This campaign aims to attract young talent and skilled workers. As part of this initiative, a traveling exhibition on the nursing profession will also be offered in schools and job centers in the district. In addition, prospective nursing specialists can complete generalist training in hospitals, nursing homes and outpatient services.

The three nursing schools in the Bergstrasse district are particularly worth mentioning: the Bergstrasse Health Academy, the Education Center for Health Professions and maxQ in Heppenheim. These institutions offer comprehensive training opportunities and are an important part of the strategy to meet the need for nursing staff. Further information on training and further education opportunities can be found at this link.

The situation on the labor market therefore remains exciting, especially in the care sector, which will play an even greater role in the future. Those responsible in the district are working hard to address the challenges and promote positive development. It remains to be hoped that the labor market situation in the Bergstrasse district can continue to stabilize in the coming months.
