Large construction site on the B254: diversions are now necessary!
There is a lot of work going on in the region around Alsfeld these days: The B254, which is used daily by many commuters, is being extensively renovated between Alsfeld and Lauterbach. The work began on July 7, 2025 and should be completed by October, they report Wetzlarer Neue Zeitung as well as Hesse Mobile.
The affected section of the route lies between the Elpersweide roundabout and Schwalmtal/Hopfgarten, near the Klingel Knopf car park. Over time, road damage in the form of network cracks, thinning and ruts has accumulated here, which now needs to be repaired. In total, the renovation of the road surface is planned over a length of around 2.9 kilometers.
This is how the construction site works
The renovation measures are divided into different construction phases, with the first phase lasting from July 7th until the end of the Hessian summer holidays. During this time, the B254 will be completely closed, requiring a diversion for federal road traffic. Traffic from the direction of Lauterbach will be redirected from the junction near Brauerschwend via Rainrod and Eifa to Alsfeld. If you want to go from Alsfeld to Lauterbach, you have to take the B49 to Romrod and from there continue back through a series of towns to the B254, as in the information from Hesse Mobile described.
In the next construction phases, the diversion route from Lauterbach to Alsfeld will remain unchanged. Traffic from Alsfeld to Lauterbach will be guided past the construction area in a one-way system during construction work. Road users are asked to adapt to the changed traffic routing and to allow sufficient time for the diversion. Hessen Mobil will provide regular information about changes in traffic routing and construction progress.
Investments in infrastructure
The Federal Republic of Germany is investing a total of around 2.3 million euros in maintaining the transport infrastructure in the northern Vogelsberg district, which represents a significant measure to improve road quality. According to the plans, the work should be completed by October 2025, with the construction work always being carried out in consultation with the parties involved in order to ensure the traffic flow as best as possible.
It is still unclear whether the road renovation can be completed in time for the end of the summer holidays, but one thing is certain: the damage to the road is considered obvious and the measures are urgently needed to avoid major problems on the busy route. The planners hope that the renovation work can ensure the long-term satisfaction of road users.
