The drinking water from the Kinzig reservoir could soon bubble into the households of the Main-Kinzig district and the cities of Frankfurt and Hanau. The Water Association Kinzig (WVK) has ambitious plans that are expected to be implemented from the end of 2028. Managing Director Dr. Holger Scheffler reports that the building applications have now been made and the permits have been applied for. The financing is also secured-the total cost of the project amounts to around 70 million euros, a proud sum for a Hessian project that is unique in this form, such as Osthessen-News reported.

With a capacity of up to 13.5 million cubic meters per year, the new waterworks is largely supplied by the drinking water from the Kinzig reservoir, which counts every drop with an area of ​​around 125 hectares and a capacity of around seven million cubic meters. In the future, around 9 million cubic meters can be prepared annually. Half of this amount is used in the Main-Kinzig district, while the other half flows into the urban areas of Hanau and Frankfurt.

Technologically up to date

The drinking water is prepared using a multibarrier system, which includes ultrafiltration, among other things. In order to meet the challenges of climate change, a new ventilation system to combat algae growth in the Kinzig reservoir is also planned. The water prepared is transported via an almost eight kilometer long pipeline, which is connected to the existing system in Neudorf with a diameter of 60 cm. There it is mixed with fountain water from the southern Vogelsberg, as shown on the website of Hessen Wasser.

In the context of a long -term sustainable water supply, drinking water extraction from surface water in the wet seasons is an important step.
