Warm farewell: Olytha Farnung is leaving the Wigbertschule Hünfeld

In Hünfeld, a chapter of the Wigbertschule is coming to an end: the esteemed teacher Olytha Farnung will be retiring at the end of this school year. In an emotional setting, school principal Sandra Möllers said goodbye to the educator and acknowledged her impressive achievements over the past decades. Möllers thanked on behalf of the state of Hesse and praised Farnung as a person “with heart and clear opinion” who has significantly enriched the lives of her students and colleagues. Due to the transition to retirement, the school will miss a creative and warm personality who was an advisor and friend to many teachers.

Farnung, who graduated from the Marienschule in Fulda in 1979, has had an eventful career. After studying art and Catholic theology at the Kassel University, she began her legal clerkship in 1986. She found her first job at the Edertalschule in Frankenberg before moving to the Wigbertschule Hünfeld at her own request. Here she quickly took on responsibility as a specialist spokesperson and worked in the areas of art, ethics and the Catholic religion. Their achievements were recognized with gifts from the student councils, and school spokeswoman Alexandra Dhein presented a symbolic flower to commemorate the first day of school.

Insight into the successes

In 2025, the committed teacher will celebrate her 40th anniversary. Her interdisciplinary competence is reflected not only in her involvement in the design of Abitur tasks, but also in her active participation in examination readings for the state Abitur in Wiesbaden. She was also significantly involved in collaborations with the Hünfeld police and the Heliosklinik Hünfeld. Her impressive career in education also includes work as an instructor at the study seminar for high schools from 2008 to 2012. But she was not only active in the classroom: Farnung was also responsible for the annually changing stage sets for the school enrollment ceremonies.

In addition to Farning's farewell, there was also another significant event at the Wigbertschule on the same day. Markus Bente, a long-time headmaster, was also retired. The big ceremony took place in the school auditorium and was inspiring with the warm words of thanks from guest speakers and the musical accompaniment by groups of students. Bente, who has been in charge of the Wigbertgymnasium since 2015, was valued for his leadership and humor, which played a significant role in shaping the school's good reputation.

Background and context

Education is a central component of social development in Germany. The history of the education system goes back to the 18th century, when compulsory schooling was introduced in Prussia. This reform was crucial not only for school provision, but also for national identity and cultural integration. The role of schools as places to support young people is also shaped by the current educational policy challenges and the need for diverse educational offerings. A look at the development of the education system shows how it has changed over the years and how important access to high-quality education is for everyone. The expansion of secondary education and the opening of higher schools to wider sections of the population, especially after the Second World War, were steps in the right direction and emphasize the relevance of schools in society.

With the retirement of Olytha Farnung and Markus Bente, the Wigbertschule faces overlapping farewells that signal the beginning of a new era. As the school bids farewell to its creative minds and warm personalities, it is to be hoped that their successors will also retain the values and passion for education.
