After-work market: Witzenhausen focuses on local shopping for local diversity!

The penultimate after-work market of the year is coming up in Witzenhausen, and it's all about the “Shop Home” campaign. Today, October 2, 2025, organized by the Action Group for Trade and Commerce as well as local traders and the Kassel-Marburg Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK), the market square will once again be the scene of lively encounters and busy activities.

“Shopping in the region secures training positions, supports cultural events and improves the quality of life,” emphasizes Kerstin Walger-Wenisch, who is actively involved in stationary retail. This statement perfectly summarizes the motivation of local actors who want to show how important retail is to community life.

Strengthening local trade

Heinrich Hassenpflug, one of the organizers, emphasizes the importance of the retail presence. It not only ensures a lively city center, but also attracts visitors who appreciate the flair of the region. The “Shop Home” initiative aims to raise awareness of the benefits of shopping locally. In contrast to anonymous online ordering, local retailers offer an individual alternative that promises personality and quality.

Carla and Michael Schäfer from the Rübezahl-Apotheke add: “Retailers play a fundamental social role, they pay trade tax and organize local festivals.” These activities help to promote social interaction in Witzenhausen and strengthen the community.

Participation campaign and proceeds for animal protection

A special highlight of the after-work market is the “Spin the wheel and win” participation campaign, which was launched to support the local animal welfare association. The campaign has already raised 155 euros, and the organizers are pleased about active participation and support. “Every cent counts when it comes to helping our animals,” said the organizers.

The IHK emphasizes the role of local retailers, service providers and restaurateurs as pillars of the regional economy. Stationary retail is not only an important employer, but above all also a place that often offers flexible work opportunities for women and mothers.

The organizers call on citizens to value the diversity and quality of regional businesses: “A lively city center is important for the attractiveness of our region and secures jobs,” is the message from heimat-shoppen.de.

In summary, the “Heimatshoppen” initiative in Witzenhausen is an excellent example of how local communities can benefit from active support of retail. Let’s strengthen the uniqueness of our homeland together – the next time you visit your favorite local store!
