Eschwege: Gudrun Schmidt rettet Tiere mit Herz und Hingabe!
In Eschwege, an impressive personality lives that works tirelessly for our animal friends: Gudrun Schmidt. The 74-year-old, who for a long time acted as chair of the Eschwege animal welfare association and the surrounding area, is still committed to the treasurer in the local shelter. Her connection to animals began when her three cats ran and she discovered the shelter. From then on, her life was shaped by a loving handling of animals. According to hna she initially took care of the core in 2007.
In the shelter, Gudrun is not alone: you and her committed team take care of a variety of animals. There are currently 29 kittens and eight mothers, in addition to rabbits, guinea pigs, goats, chickens, turtles and even wild animals. The work often not only requires a lot of heart, but also an enormous time investment. Gudrun mentions that it sometimes goes beyond the 40-hour week to do justice to all animals.

The financing of the animal shelter is a challenge that is secured by membership fees of 15 euros per year, municipal funds and donations. The donations in particular are essential, since without it the shelter may have to be closed. Every help is welcome here - and the gratitude of Gudrun Schmidt is especially true of her husband Klaus, who supports her.
The shelter can report another success with the recently carried out castration campaign "Catch and Release". According to Werra-Rundschau , a total of 80 cats were captured, neutered and back to their homeland. The campaign took place from March to the end of May and was supported by the Hesse State Animal Protection Association. The cats came to the shelter via the villages in the area, including Wanfried, Sontra, Waldkappel and Herleshausen. Support from many volunteers was also required here.
The action was a complete success! It is particularly noteworthy that in the over 80 cats that had to be kept in quarantine were also many foundlings. Seven of these cats were pregnant or had just got young. Fortunately, the chances are good for the kittens, which are almost all reserved and can move to their new home in mid -July. Older cats, on the other hand, are still looking for a loving home, often particularly suitable for people or seniors living alone. Among them are the two foundlies Ernie and Emma, who are eagerly waiting for a new home.
