Building permits in the Werra-Meißner district: upswing for living space!

Many were particularly pleased about the permits for single -family houses. In the first half of this year, 20 such residential buildings have already been approved. Throughout the year, there were 29 and 2023 55. There are also positive developments in the two-family house segment: two permits are available, while only one approved in 2024. In the case of apartment buildings, however, the situation has remained somewhat more cautious, since only two permits were given in the first half of the year, on the same time with the rather lean numbers of previous years.

Hessen recorded a slight increase in the residential building stock of 1.4 million apartments, which is 0.3 percent more than in the previous year. In this context, it is remarkable that single -family houses dominate with a share of 63.3 percent. These numbers are part of a larger plan-the "Master Plan Living" of the Werra-Meißner district. This was decided by the district council in May 2025 and is intended to support the creation of needs -based living space.

But the challenges remain. In the Werra-Meißner-Kreis there is little available and inexpensive living space, which brings many to the barricades. There is a lack of barrier -free apartments, and the vacancy often remains invisible. In order to counter these problems, a living space analysis is currently being created for all 16 cities and municipalities as well as the district. The aim is to improve the situation in a targeted manner, so that everyone has a fair chance of their own home.

Another positive aspect is the affordability index for self-used properties in the Werra-Meißner-Kreis, which amounts to 150. This speaks for a slight improvement in affordability, which is particularly important for young families and first buyers.
