Celebrate with traditional costume and music: The Ziegenhainer salad fair starts!
There is great anticipation in Schwalmstadt for the 297th Ziegenhainer Salad Fair, which will be celebrated from June 18th to 23rd, 2025. At this traditional festival, which takes place in the picturesque Schwalm-Eder district, the focus is on community. The celebrations begin on Wednesday evening, June 18th, with a festive fair singing on the parade ground at 7 p.m., as HNA reports.
A look at the variety of events shows that there is something for everyone. Things will be very special on Thursday. In addition to the traditional latte meal in the festival tent, visitors can look forward to the 7th Ziegenhain duck race on the Schwalm. The exhibition “Vincent Burek – 50th anniversary of his death” will also open in the Schwalm Museum. The evening is crowned with a rock evening with the band “Just Queen”, for which admission costs 8 euros.
Traditions and highlights
The salad fair has a long tradition that goes back to the 18th century. At that time, Landgrave Karl Schwälmer invited farmers to a feast with potatoes and salad, which led to the tradition of eating salad and thus to the festival's name, according to FFH. On Friday at 7 p.m. the traditional march will take place from the town hall to the festival tent, where the festival tent will be ceremoniously opened - musically accompanied by the band “Next Chapter”, and best of all: entry is free!
Saturday afternoon is available to the little ones in the festival tent. An ecumenical service starts on Sunday, followed by a large parade at 2 p.m. with the motto: “50 Years of the German Fairy Tale Route”. There are numerous participants in traditional Schwalm costume, which is a popular photo opportunity for many visitors. The best vantage point for this parade is Landgraf-Philipp-Straße.
A unique experience
The fair Monday also has its highlights: At 10:30 a.m. there is a fire drill on the parade ground. A very special ritual then takes place in the festival tent - the new residents are introduced as part of the so-called Lattchen. They receive a head of lettuce that they must wear tied to their arm before being thrown into the air to be ceremonially welcomed into the community. This is accompanied musically by the “Schwalmgranaten”.
In addition, a family day will be offered on Monday at the fairground from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., where family-friendly prizes will be offered. Anyone who would like to take part in the lettuce eating or duck racing can easily purchase tickets from the tourist information office, online or by email.
The Ziegenhainer Salad Fair is a festival for the whole family and not only offers numerous attractions, but also a welcome opportunity to maintain old traditions and make new friends. A festival where fun is very important and community is celebrated, as it should be!
