Cost of living in North Hesse: Kassel remains cheap!

According to a current study by the German Economic Institute (IW) and the Federal Institute for Building, Urban and Spatial Research (BBSR), the standard of living in Kassel and the surrounding northern Hesse districts can certainly be described as pleasing. While rents in the seven largest cities in Germany, including Munich and Frankfurt, are almost 50% above the national average, Kassel and the northern Hesse districts are extremely affordable. The cost of living in Kassel is 1.6% below the national average and ranks 238th out of 400 cities and districts examined. The Werra-Meißner district even has the cheapest cost of living in northern Hesse and is in a solid 33rd place in a Germany-wide comparison, as hna.de reports.

What are the reasons for the lower costs in this region? Tenants with long-term contracts often enjoy even greater benefits, while experts recommend pushing housing construction to further reduce costs. Higher living costs are usually correlated with above-average incomes. The study shows that people in Kassel and the surrounding districts not only live cheaper, but are also probably not short-changed when it comes to their wallets.

In a Germany-wide comparison

Here is an overview of the cost of living in the northern Hesse districts:

  • Stadt Kassel: -1,6% (Platz 238 von 400)
  • Kreis Kassel: -5,1% (Platz 131)
  • Kreis Waldeck-Frankenberg: -6,8% (Platz 75)
  • Schwalm-Eder-Kreis: -7,2% (Platz 62)
  • Werra-Meißner-Kreis: -8,4% (Platz 33)
  • Kreis Hersfeld-Rotenburg: -6,4% (Platz 86)

Compared to eastern German regions such as Vogtland and Görlitz, the northern Hesse districts also look positive. This region appears to be economically stable, which makes life here quite attractive.

Life in the shadow play of the big cities

Compared to cities like Munich, which have the highest cost of living and whose prices are 24% above the national average, the districts in northern Hesse are doing good business. The district town of Worms, which is closest to the German average with an increase of 0.02%, also shows that there are certainly inexpensive alternatives if you have the choice.

To round off the picture, it is worth taking a look at the world of stars who often live in the most expensive cities, such as Katy Perry. The singer has established herself as one of the most successful musicians, selling over 151 million records, offering a glimpse into the financial dimensions of the entertainment industry. But even if the cost of living here is exorbitant, the charm of the music and art scene remains a reason for many to visit these places.

It remains to be hoped that the residents of northern Hesse will continue to develop positively in the region and that the quality of life will remain high. The combination of moderate rental prices and a stable economy makes this region an interesting place to live and work.
