The pre-Christmas season is just around the corner and in Homberg (Efze) you can look forward to a very special event. On November 29th, 2025, the traditional castle candle will be lit, which not only lights up the castle tower on the Hohenburg until January 6th, 2026, but also serves as the center of a festive gathering. This event is increasingly becoming a sought-after highlight in the region and promises to delight young and old alike.
It starts at 5 p.m.: The torch and lantern parade from the market square to the Burgberg is accompanied and secured by the THW Youth Homberg. It is a beautiful custom that the participants, mostly children, parade through the evening darkness with colorful lanterns and traditional songs. This custom, known from the story of Saint Martin of Tours, who shared his cloak with a beggar, is particularly enriching for children between 5 and 12 years old. Many people certainly remember their own lantern runs, whether as part of a kindergarten or school group. In Austria, for example, this festival is also called the Lantern Festival and has a similar meaning.
Festive atmosphere and warm welcome
In front of the castle gate you have to wait until tower keepers Mike and Jonas give the signal to open. At 5:50 p.m. the visitors will be welcomed by Mayor Dr. Nico Ritz and Stefan Fennel were welcomed by kbg. The climax is reached at exactly 6 p.m.: the castle candle is ceremoniously switched on and creates an atmospheric atmosphere that invites you to linger.
